It's the show that has become a worldwide smash and a hit amongst the UK gay community for its sharp and sexy satire of American suburban life.

And now Desperate Housewives is set to attract even more attention, after one of its stars came out in real life.

Marcia Cross, who plays feisty and fastidious Stepford wife Bree Can De Kamp, will appear on the cover of US gay magazine The Advocate to announce her sexuality next month.

According to The Sun, Cross' sexuality is an open secret on the show and amongst the acting fraternity.

"She hasn't made a secret of it," an "insider" told the newspaper.

"Everyone on the show is aware of Marcia's leanings, as is the rest of Hollywood."

However, she has been backed in her decision to go public by the show's creator Marc Cherry, himself gay.

"Marc is very supportive of her," the newspaper says.

The revelation is unlikely to alter the actress' role in the show, although an upcoming storyline does involve a close family member coming out.

Bree's son, played by Shawn Pyfrom, will be outed in the second series, currently about to start showing in the US.

Cross is not the first star of a hit show to come out.

Cynthia Nixon, Miranda in Sex and the City, announced she was in a long term relationship with a woman last year sparking tabloid attention.

Press speculation suggests Cross is in a relationship with another top actress, although their relationship is still under wraps.
